Paleoclimates and Biophysical Field Methods

In my research career, I've spent quite a bit of time in Namibia, much of it at the remarkable Gobabeb Namib Research Institute. A number of my video projects have been in support of Gobabeb's educational mission. Here are two of those projects:

  • Paleoclimates, a series of animated shorts that were intended to be part of a larger course on Namibian plaeclimates, with my colleague Eugene Marais. The course was never launched unfortunately but the shorts are still a valuable synopsis of the fascinating issues of climate, history, and evolution of the remarkable Namib Desert.
  • Biophysical Field Methods is a hybrid online / field course developed in collaboration with an Israeli colleague, Prof Berry Pinshow of Ben-Gurion University of the Negev. It consists of roughly ten hours of video lessons, capped by a three-week intensive field experience at Gobabeb. The online course is offered annually in October. If you have an interest in taking the course, please drop me a line at jsturner@syr.edu. Otherwise, the course is available on udemy.com, and one can take it independently of the hybrid course.

Paleoclimates is a series of ten animated shorts that describe various aspects of the variations of climate of the Namib desert and its impact on evolution of the remarkable flora and fauna of this fascinating desert.

Biophysical Field Methods

Biophysical Field Methods

Biophysical Field Methods is a high-level technical course aimed at senior-level to graduate-level students in ecology. Professional ecologists could also profit. The course outlines the physical nature of adaptation, including the meaning and measurement of temperature, humidity, and what this means for the physical environment inhabited by plants and animals. It is situated deliberately in a harsh climate: the Namib Desert. This playlist is a sampler of the videos for this course.

Biophysical Field Methods was produced in collaboration with Prof Berry Pinshow of Ben-Gurion University of the Negev. The full course is available at udemy.com
